Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Day 10

Last night was a blast! Had the gi on, and learned some open guard techniques.

1) Control your opponent's wrists (grip the sleeves)
2) Get your feet in the opponent's hips

Those were the two things I really got out of the training session...

We learned 2 submissions and a sweep from the open guard.

The triangle:

I have always loved the triangle. For some reason, I always look to get a triangle.

Anyway...the technique was to get on your side slightly, then with the opposite foot go past the ear of the person in the guard, and pull the opposite arm in one fluid motion to go for the triangle.

The second thing we did was a sweep. If you open your guard and go on your hips and push down the knee of the opponent, you can kick your leg on "top" and go for the sweep.

The final thing we learned was a kimura. I LOVE this kimura. If your opponent is leaning forward with bad posture, you can push your legs through to closed guard and go for the kimura! I hadn't thought about just letting the person slide up and going for the kimura!

Open roll was pretty good. I got an armbar and americana submissions, but I was very disappointed by the fact that I missed some easy armbars. My opponent was giving me everything and I could barely capitalize on his mistakes.

Can't wait for no-gi tonight!!!!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Days 7-9

Friday: Open Roll!

It was great to just spar on Friday. I've been learning a lot lately, and to finally put some of it togeter felt good.

The one thing I got from Friday- I was told that I need to get stronger! I've really never lifted weights before, so I'll need to get some advice from others.

Saturday: Gi

Saturday was pretty awesome. We did cross collar chokes. I usually never thought about going for the choke, but now it helps me to develop my guard game. We worked 3 different cross collar chokes The first one was grabbing deep cross collar, then going for the material on the outside. The second choke was going deep on both lapels. The last choke involved flaring the elbow out and then going for the opposite lapel and pulling down.

Today: Open Roll

A few of us decided to go to the gym today and roll for a bit. We all brought our gis and went for an hour and a half! I really tried to practice passing guard. I often find myself just sitting in someone's guard and letting them attack.

Also, today i had my first submission in the gym (americana from mount). It felt amazing! I know you're not supposed to brag about subbing someone, but it feels really good to see myself progressing. Most of the time I have been the nail, but I was finally the hammer! The person said to me "Man, you are really coming along!"

Gotta keep on putting my time in!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Day 6

No-gi last night. We kept on training our butterfly guard.

Same thing as last time: Open guard up, get hooks in, get on one butt cheek and go for the sweep.

We then worked on 2 more techniques from butterfly guard. We practiced getting the guillotine by removing the underhook and pushing up on the opposite shoulder.

The second technique was getting the person off-balance when they try to flatten you out and get you on your back. You can post up on the opposite hand, get up on your feet, and go for better position, arm control, sprawling out, etc.

I need to work on my cardio! After technique we did 15 squats, 15 squats + jumps, 15 squats + jumps + sprawls, 1 minute of mountain climbers, and then 20 pushups. I was already dogged from 3 rounds of sparring before class + technique!

Open roll was fun, I think I did 3 or 4 rounds. I'm getting better at not gassing, but I still have a long way to go before I can keep rolling without gassing.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Day 4-5

Soooo...I have been very lazy lately an haven't posted my last 2 training sessions :(

Monday- Gi

We went over a cross-collar choke from mount. Needless to say, I am very bad at using lapel for chokes.

I need to practice the technique of putting my elbow on my hip (mounted) and shoving my hand cross-collar.

I rolled a little bit afterward. I didn't do too bad. I had a few sweeps, but ended up getting subbed by a straight arm bar. Oh well!

Tuesday- No Gi

Last night we worked on a sweep from butterfly guard. It was funny because the other night I watched a video on the exact sweep we learned!

I really like the butterfly guard. In the past, I was sitting flat on my butt without pushing my head into their chest. It's so important to keep tight on their chest and on one butt cheek.

I'm going to take tonight off, but will be back training on Thursday!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Day 3

Friday was open mat. It was pretty fun, although I was tapping most of the time. However, I learned so much!

The biggest thing that I learned was the proper body position when my opponent had a dominant position on me. I had previously been turning away rather than turning toward the opponent, which allowed my back to be taken.

I also learned that I was doing the upa wrong. I had not been throwing my hips up high, which restricted my ability to get my opponent off balance. I hope to get a few good sweeps tonight!

Not really much more to say about it. I think I went through all the rounds with everyone (I was gassed by the time we were done). I'm glad I'm at that point, but my cardio needs a lot of work.

No gi tonight!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Day 2

Last night we did some no-gi training. I got to class early so I could warm up and get about 10 minutes of open mat before class started.

A couple of guys were practicing sweeps from the half-guard, so Jeff decided to expand on it for our technique.

I learned a lot last night- mostly to keep my arms "T-Rex'd" and get the knee across while turning on my side. I also need to remember to keep the opponents foot trapped. A few times I didn't keep the foot trapped and I let myself vulnerable to an easy pass.

From half-guard, we worked on the kimura (a move I'm starting to love- but NOT more than triangle) and two sweeps.

It was a learning experience tonight. I really need to keep on working my sweeps.

Nothing special in open roll- 2 2:30 min rounds. I tapped a lot, but also learned quite a bit. I find myself giving them chokes quite often, so I need to be aware of my body position.

Tonight- open mat!!!!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training: Day 1

I've decided to start blogging my BJJ training to track my progress...

Last night I decided to switch gyms from LA Boxing to Evanston Boxing Gym for 2 main reasons:

1) They offer both Gi and No-Gi. If I want to start competing in the future, I feel that I need to get more technique down with Gi.

2) The BJJ instructor (Jeff Serafin) is a brown belt under Jack McVicker. I'm excited to go back to the school that I started with!

Anyway...to the training!

I'm going to have to stretch out before class starts, because we went right into technique. I've been used to about a 30 min warmup + stretches before technique, so I'll need to get there early to do some on my own.

Technique:

1) From guard- grabbing cross-collar and same side arm, breaking down the opponent's base, and then taking the back.

2) Same thing, but then going for a cross-collar choke if you can't take the back

3) Going for the back, then choke, and finishing with an armbar from guard

After we did technique for about 30 minutes, we played "King of the Hill". Jeff asked for someone to go to the middle of the mat on their back. Nobody volunteered at first, so I jumped in. The purpose was for the man on the ground to not let anyone pass. If the "King" swept or subbed the attacker, the next person jumped in.

I did pretty well, although someone passed my guard on the first try after a few minutes. Jeff said that I had some good hip movement, but I know I need to work on my open guard a bit more.

We did 2 rounds of open roll given the timing. I was completely owned the first round by a 4 stripe white. He got me with some nasty collar chokes and really held a dominant position the entire time.

My second round I went against a newer student who I must have outweighed by 60 lbs. I had a few finishes on him (americana from side control and guillotine from guard).

I was very winded after the 2nd round. It must have been the gi... :)
